It Takes Courage To Be Boring

it takes courage to be boring

In today’s world, we all want fast results. We want same-day delivery, pizza in 30 minutes, and 6-pack abs in a week. And don’t get me wrong…I want them too. But just because we want crazy fast results, doesn’t mean that’s what always happens. Some of the best things take time.

As a matter of fact, when I think of the things I want the most (the ones that really affect my life in a positive way), they all take time. There are very few “overnight sensations” in business. Real-life change takes consistency and time. It can be boring to be slow and consistent.

And in a world looking for microwave results, it takes courage to create boring change.

Be Willing To Be Boring

Let’s use fitness as an example. Many of us (looking at myself in the mirror here) have started a workout plan with crazy high expectations. We roll into the first week of P90x and get after it without our hair on fire! “I am going to be jacked!”

But routines like that are really tough. And after about 3 to 4 days of these insane workouts, we are incredibly sore. It’s hard to move our arms. And we don’t have 6 pack abs yet. So we quit. Just me?

Compare That With Slow and Steady

Last year around this time I realized I was heavier than I had ever been. I knew I needed to do something to create some change. But I wanted to do something that I could/would maintain. I already walked a little on the treadmill each morning (to get my brain pumping a bit). So I decided to do some push-ups before I got on the treadmill. Simple. Then I increased my walking to occasional jogging…and increased my distance by a small amount.

Then I did that for a long time.

Over the course of 5 months, I dropped about 10 pounds.

This was not the sexy path. It was boring. But boring work, over time, got results. Most people are not willing to consistently do the boring work.

The same is true for business, content, sales, etc. It takes courage to do the boring work to grow and change.

Start by doing that boring work today.
